It was Opening Day in Major League Baseball on Thursday, and the Bronx Bombers showcased their new lineup’s power against the Milwaukee Brewers. It was a sell out crowd in the Bronx with 46,208 fans cheering on the players. New York Yankees lefty pitcher Carlos Rodon got the ball for Opening Day against a potent Brewers lineup, pitching 5.1 innings, 4 hits, 7 strikeouts, 2 BB, and gave up a home run.
Rodon looked sharp and confident on the mound, mixing in his entire pitch repertoire of fastball, slider, curveball, sinkers, and changeup to the pesky Brewers hitters. Rodon is known to prefer a two-pitch approach, fastball and slider, but abandoned that game plan in game 1 of the New York Yankees season. Rodon faced off against Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, ending his afternoon in 5.0 innings pitched, 8 strikeouts, 1 BB, and giving up 2 home runs.
Peralta is known for his power fastball, his knee-buckling changeup gave up a lead-off home run to New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells. In 2024, Yankees manager Aaron Boone played around with having Wells lead off a few games last season. The bold move from Boone paid off against Peralta in the 1st inning. Gold Glove SS Anthony Volpe also homered to right field, with MVP Aaron Judge supplying an RBI double later in the game, along with new addition CF Cody Bellinger hitting a sacrifice fly RBI.
The New York Yankees’ potent lineup scored 4 runs against Milwaukee pitching. Former Brewers 9th inning closer Devin Williams was able to pick up the win. Williams gave up a run after loading the bases in the 9th, picking up 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 2 hits, before giving up 1 earned run. It’s never easy closing out a close game in the Bronx, but Williams had his first taste of the competitive atmosphere at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees will play their second game of the opening series with the Brewers on Saturday, March 29.
